WEARING CLOTH (IWA-AKWA) FESTIVAL
This is one of the social activities which people of
Umuakagu and around the Okigwe zone are
well known for. It is an exciting cultural event inherited from their
forefathers and preserved from generation to generation. It is an initiation
ceremony which is meant to introduce youths into adulthood, thus the
qualification to marry a wife and start a family, partake in village meetings,
pay taxes and dues and so on. It is a ceremony that is packed with funfair.
On the D-day, the celebrants are adored in a long
colorful George wrapper, dancing and blowing whistle through the market square
while being flanked by their families and well-wishers. It is normally done
every three years.
